Whites Purchases Two New Terex® Material Handlers
COVENTRY, UK, 24 November, 2008 --- The world of scrap metal has become even more competitive in the current economic climate, so the purchase of two new Terex® material handlers by Whites of Coventry Ltd. is an investment into the future of their business, says owner Jim White. The family business, based across the A45 trunk road from the former Ryton car plant, has been in the scrap metal industry for nearly 40 years. The two machines, a Terex® 1804LCi crawler handler and a TM230 wheeled handler, will process a variety of metals on site for export.
Both machines are fitted with Terex® grabs to handle the 500 to 800 tonnes of scrap that makes its way to the Whites plant every week. Sheared metal is stockpiled and then packed into containers for shipment abroad, which is then recycled for further manufacture. The tracked 1804LCi machine, positioned on a soil bank, is primarily used to rip engines from cars and deal with bulk loads of scrap before it is fed into a Lefort shear/baler. The 18-metre reach Terex® 1804LCi is very well-suited for this sorting and loading role, with the elevated cab giving excellent views into lorries when filling with processed material. The smaller TM230 machine is used as a yard run around, its more compact size and tyres allowing it greater access into confined areas of the site.
Jim White recently replaced a selection of machines with the two Terex® models. He spoke to close friends and colleagues in the industry who recommended Terex® as a good choice for handlers. “When we considered what to choose to replace our aging machines, Terex came very highly recommended to us by other operators. The availability of service and spares backup is second to none,” White comments.
The company has run the 1804LCi for six months and the TM230 for two, and White adds, “It is likely that these machines will spend a good few years with us before replacement, as we will hopefully see the scrap market grow to levels that it was at this time last year. So far we have been very impressed with the machines’ performance; they have met our expectations well.”
