Terex® TA30S Help Save The Beach At Weymouth

MOTHERWELL, SCOTLAND, JANUARY 2008 -- Following recent heavy coastal storms across southern England, two Terex® TA30 articulated dump trucks have been called in by the Environment Agency in Dorset from plant-hirer and contractor G Crook & Sons of Dorchester. The trucks will help with the realignment of the beach shingle which has drifted up to one mile along the long public beach at the seaside resort of Weymouth.

The task involves the loading and hauling of some 10,000 tonnes of shingle over a 3-4 week period, and dumping it back where it came from – a round-trip distance of up to one mile. Keeping the beach stable and in a good, usable condition is a regular annual spring-time task but after the unusually heavy storms in December, the excessive amount of shift has exposed large areas of the sand base, leaving the beach dangerously exposed to further, potentially damaging erosion, which would have been even more difficult to reinstate if left until the spring.

It is a job which ideally suits the low ground pressure and all-wheel-drive traction of the Terex® ADTs which, despite the slippery, high rolling-resistance presented by the loose shingle, are capable of negotiating and hauling without digging in and getting bogged down.

G Crook & Sons operates a fleet of nine Terex® 30-ton capacity articulated haulers, and this job typifies the versatility which is required for their general earthmoving, contracting, and sand and gravel work in quarries along the south coast area.
