Nebbett continues to expand with confidence, and takes delivery of the first Terex® TM520 in UK
MOTHERWELL, SCOTLAND, 24 September, 2008 - - - B.Nebbett & Son Ltd of Mitcham, the largest independent steel processor in South London, has purchased the first Terex® TM520 Material Handler in the UK. This is part of a major on-going investment and expansion programme which Nebbett has been engaged in over the past five years. Nearly £6 million has been invested in 18 months to expand the central Mitcham depot, and to acquire a new site in Guildford. Together with the new equipment, this investment has already boosted production output by more than 30 per cent, from approximately 300 to 400t per day, and as new facilities come on stream, the planned eventual capacity will be up to 600t per day.
At the heart of the Mitcham processing plant, which is highly mechanised, is a fleet of four Terex® material handlers. The 52t TM520 joins three existing Terex® machines, which are all less than five years old. The new machine, the largest in the Terex® TM range, was needed for the extra reach, lift heights and grab capacity which it offers, to feed a giant new 1250t Lefort Side Compression shear-press, which is the largest and first of its type to be delivered in the UK.
Powered by a 249hp (183kW) turbo-charged engine, the TM520 is equipped with a 12.1m boom and 9.3m stick giving a maximum outreach of 21.8m and load over height of 16.1m. This means that it can operate over a wide area without repositioning, and feed the Lefort shear with large and long sections of steel for cutting into manageable sizes for onward processing. The five-tine orange-peel grab has a capacity of 1100 litres, and with the precision controls of the Terex® TM520, is capable of picking, sorting and loading small individual pieces and large, awkward loads.
The elevating and forwarding cab of the TM520 also means that the operator has a clear view into the loading hopper, and it is capable of high stacking when there is a large amount of material being processed.
Inside the air-conditioned cab, is an in-built electronic management system with LCD display panel, and steering of the machine is precisely controlled by a single joy-stick lever.
“We have been very satisfied with Terex® machines for many years, which is why we stayed with Terex when we needed to upgrade our capacity, having evaluated other options,” says owner and managing director Stuart Nebbett. “The payback for loyalty is continuity and standardization. In a fast-moving industrial situation, you need dependable equipment and reliable support.”
Commenting on investing and expanding in the current economic climate, Stuart Nebbett explains, “The industry is certainly changing, all the time, and we have to adapt with it. In spite of the downturn in Europe, there is enormous potential, especially for ferrous material in the emerging markets in Asia-Pacific, India and China, and we aim to export around 60 per cent of our product.”
“We do not have a permanent wharf or dock-side facility, but we do have what we regard as an ‘inland dock’, where we can sort, process, compact and short-term store material. Then when required, we can load containers with carefully selected material, to a high density to maximise the load potential and minimise transportation costs. This gives us the flexibility to ship the containers by road straight to any port, such as Southampton, or to the Eurotunnel for direct rail transfer to mainland Europe.”
Another good reason for investing in the modern, efficient equipment and building clean, new facilities is, he says, that it makes it easier to keep abreast of the latest and increasingly stringent safety and quality regulations.
For example, Nebbett is opening a totally new depot in Guildford, to be called “Guildford Metal Exchange”, for handling non-ferrous materials in a ‘public-friendly’ and less intimidating environment than the full-scale industrial plant which they have in Mitcham.
