Terex® Material Handler Outpaces Dock Crane While Loading HMS 1 And 2
MOTHERWELL, SCOTLAND, 27th January 2009 --- All Metal Recovery (AMR), a staunch advocate of Terex® material handlers, saw a recent investment pay dividends when its new TM350 outpaced a dock crane. The Terex® TM350 material handler was working alongside the crane loading HMS 1 and 2 on a bulk vessel for export when it made four passes for every one of the crane’s.
For scrap and metal recyclers, this an intriguing concept in a time of economic uncertainty because, traditionally, the main role of dockside loading would belong to the crane, as they can pick up around three times more material than the material handlers. However, with the material handlers costing around six times less than the crane, being more versatile for general yard work and easier to transport, AMR believe this machine meets both their budget and processing targets perfectly and can give them a lot more return on their investment.
AMR Operations Manager, Ian Clark, thinks the Terex® machine is well-matched to the tough scrap yard environment, “We process more than 30,000 tonnes of scrap per month, which is no mean feat – it takes a sturdy machine to be able to cope with the level and types of material we handle. We’ve tried several grabs and they’ve literally just fallen apart soon after purchase. The only one that stands up to the job required is Terex. Terex parts and service have also come on leaps and bounds in the past year.”
AMR own four Terex® 1804MIs, which have been in operation at their yard for eight years, and two TM350s, all of which mainly work at the company’s yard in Smethwick but also go< out on site to load ships. The new TM350 is currently feeding a Leimbach 1400 tonne precompression shear.
David Evans, AMR Yard Supervisor, says Terex would be his first choice for any future purchases. “I’m a big fan of these machines,” he comments, “They are extremely reliable and the 18-metre reach on the TM350 is exactly what we need. The machine has strength and stability, and the vario cab allows you to see clearly into the ships when loading. It’s the best all-rounder I’ve driven.” AMR has rail links to all steel works and is one of the few companies to have deep-sea dock facilities. The dock allows the company to work with large ships, handling bulk shipments of anything up to 20,000 tonnes at a time.
The 1804s work in AMR’s newest yard, where all the scrap from the other yards is consolidated and loaded into shipping containers which are destined for the Far East or onto trains bound for UK steelworks. Up to 60 containers are filled per day, making AMR one of the leading loaders of scrap export containers. On average it takes just eight minutes for the Terex® material handlers to load a container.
