IT’S A LONG HAUL FOR TEREX® TRUCKS AT LAST SCOTTISH DEEP MINE
Monday 5th October 2009 , Motherwell, Scotland, UK – Two Terex® TA25 articulated trucks working in Aberfeldy, Scotland, are making daily journeys over a steep and weather-beaten road which leads to Foss Mine, the last deep mine in Scotland.
The Terex® trucks - property of Barhaul - travel a gruelling five kilometre uphill journey to the mine, over a road that is often deep with snow from October to May. At the top, the machines are loaded with barytes, a mineral which weighs 4.23 tonnes per cubic metre, and of which Foss Mine is the only source in the UK. The trucks return via the same road, where the material is transferred to road-going vehicles, destined for Aberfeldy, to be crushed and blended. The barytes’ final destination is Aberdeen, where it is ground and added to drilling fluids in order to confine high formation pressures which are caused by oil, gas and water being liberated by drilling. This prevents ‘blowouts’ in the exploration wells.
The articulated trucks make 11 of these journeys each day, three days per week, at 25 tonnes per load. The remaining two days are spent reinstating the land.
Patrick Bradley, Managing Director of Barhaul, the subcontracting company at Foss Mine, explains why he chose the TA25 to tackle the unfriendly conditions, “The quality of the TA25 has improved steadily over the years. Our driver is traveling over uneven ground for many hours each day, this meant operator comfort was paramount when choosing which truck to go with. The Terex® truck is more than satisfactory in this category. The padding and sound proofing within the cab also meets our requirements and we know that Terex Service Engineers are always responsive to our enquiries.”
On average, Foss Mine and Barhaul have extracted and transferred 44,000 tonnes of material each year since 1985. Currently, the miners are working 130 metres below the level of access.
